Today, on September 28th, 2022, the indigenous carmaker Tata Motors introduced the cheapest mass-market EV, the Tiago EV. The Tata Nexon EV was the entry-level offering before the launch of the Tata Tiago EV. The carmaker made a few heavy changes to the exterior and interior to distinguish it from its ICE counterpart. For reference, Tata Motors dominates the majority stake in the electric four-wheeler market. Among other Tata cars in their electric domain, the Tata Nexon EV has been a bestseller since its launch. However, for the first time in India, an electric vehicle’s ex-showroom price starts at Rs 8.5 lakh! The ICE (internal combustion engine) counterparts that are under Rs 10 lakh are the Kia Sonet, the Hyundai i20, and the Hyundai Venue, to name a few. And hatchbacks are the bestselling body type. However, some carmakers market them as micro-SUVs or mini-SUVs. If you are planning to buy an EV at an affordable price, then the Tiago EV should be on your bucket list! So, let’s see what the hype is about the Tata Tiago EV.
Features
This electric iteration of the Tata Tiago EV looks much more premium than its ICE counterpart. One of the main factors is the blue theme, which other Tata EVs have. However, as for the cabin layout of both the cars, the ICE counterpart and the EV remain almost identical. It gets a seven-inch Harman-sourced touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, auto HVAC, a cooled glove box, etc.
Furthermore, it has auto-headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, multiple drive modes, car connect technology with in-built smartwatch compatibility, etc. With that compatibility, you can easily access your Tata Tiago EV’s data anywhere and anytime. It projects information, such as last parked, service dues, fuel level, the live speed with RPM, and geo-fencing, to name a few. This hatchback also keeps you safe by showing any loss of pressure on your instrument cluster, smartwatch, and smartphone.
On the safety front, the Tata Tiago gets dual airbags, ABS plus EBD, a child safety lock, a speed-sensing door lock, an engine immobilizer, etc. Speaking of safety, the ICE iteration of the Tata Tiago’s safety rating is four-stars. In addition, the EV and ICE iterations of the Tiago share the same platform. So, it should be safe to say that the 2022 Tiago EV may have an identical or even better safety rating.
As for the suspension setup, the front end of the Tiago EV has an independent lower wishbone McPherson dual path. And, at the rear end, Tata Motors has provided a twist beam with coil springs. In parallel, brakes will be taken care of front discs and rear drums at the rear end of the car. Combing the setup of the suspensions and braking, the Tata Tiago EV seems to be a promising vehicle in the electric four-wheeler segment. The ICE offering of this hatchback has proven to be comfortable on straight roads and absorbing bumps. You can also exit the corners with confidence as the suspension setup is slightly on the stiffer side. Also, please make sure that you don’t go by someone else’s opinion. It’s best to do a test drive so that you form your own opinions.
Battery Packs
The Tata Tiago EV specifications include two battery pack options: 19.2kWh and 24kWh. The former delivers an output of 60bhp/110Nm, while the latter churns out 74bhp/114Nm.
The lower battery pack has a claimed range of 250km, whereas the bigger battery pack has 315km. Please note that these figures will vary depending on traffic conditions and an individual’s driving style.
Moving on, the carmaker offers two options for chargers: a 3.3kW or 7.2kW home charger.
There is also a fast charger (DC) that can charge the Tata Tiago from 10% to 80% within fifty-seven minutes.

Prices and Variants
The Tata Tiago EV has four broad trims: XE, XT, XZ+, and XZ+ Tech Lux. They further make up seven variants.
As of September 2022, the Tata Tiago EV price starts at Rs 8.49 lakh for the base model, the Tiago EV XE.
And it goes up to Rs 11.79 lakh for the top model, the Tiago EV XZ Plus Tech LUX Fast Charge.
In terms of rivalry, there are no direct competitors as of now. But in the mass-market EV segment, the Tiago EV rivals cars such as its own Tata Nexon, Tata Tigor EV, MG’s ZS EV, etc.
It is also worth mentioning that these are introductory prices and are later subject to market change without prior notice to the customers. But don’t worry!
